Question

My Notes Ask Your Teach 0/3 points | Previous Answers GianPSE4 12 P021 A traffic light hangs from a pole as shown in the figure. The uniform aluminum pole AB is 7.5 m long and has a mass of 7.0 kg. The mass of the traffic light is 10.0 kg. (Assume the positive directions are upward and to the right.) 3.80 m (a) Determine the tension in the horizontal massless cable CD. (b) Determine the horizontal component of the force exerted by the pivot A on the aluminum pole. Determine the vertical component of this force.

Explanation / Answer

a) By applying static equilibrium conditions, sigma T = 0

m g cos 37 (L/2) + M g L cos 37 - Tl = 0

(7 * 9.8 * cos 37 * (7.5/2)) + (10 * 9.8 * 7.5 * cos 37) - (T * 3.8) = 0

3.8 T = 792.45

tension T = 208.54 N

b) horizontal component = 208.54 N

c) vertical component = m g + M g

= 9.8 (7 + 10)

vertical component = 166.6 N
