Question

Trial 1/B Resistor Capacitor Time Constant Discharge 1 Discharge 2 2.5559 6.85 8.70 100 K 47 K 0uF 10 0.1459 2.42650.11492 0.47 1. Compare the fit equation to the mathematical model for a capacitor discharge proposed in the introduction, VCV0C1Rc Interpret the fit parameters A and B. What aspects of your experiment do they measure? What are their units? 2. From the fit parameter B, calculate and enter in the data table 1/B for each trial. Compare each of these values to the time constant of your circuit. 3. If there is discrepancy between the two quantities compared in question 1, can the tolerance values explain the difference?

Explanation / Answer

1. equation of cvapacitor discharge

V(t) = Voe^(-t/RC)

now, the fit equation is

V(t) = A*e^(-tB)

hence A is the maximum voltage at t = 0 and B is the inverse of the time constnat

2. case 1, 1/B = 6.85, time constant = 1

case 2, 1/B = 8.7, time constant = 0.47

3. in both cases the discrepancy ios the time constant and the 1/B value os way more than 100% which cannot be accounted for by the tolerance levels

hence there has been a gross error while performing the experiment or tabulating the results
