Question
My No 1. -2 points YF14 8 P022. When cars are equipped with flexible bumpers, they will bounce off each other during low-speed collisions, thus causing less damage. In one such accident, a 1815-kg car traveling to the right at 1.63 m/s collides with a 1310-kg car going to the left at 1.05 m/s. Measurements show that the heavier car's speed just after the collision was 0.245 m/s in its original direction. You can ignore any road friction during the colision. (a) What was the speed of the lighter car just after the collision? m/s (b) Calculate the change in the combined kinetic energy of the two-car system during this collision.Explanation / Answer
a)
By conservation of momentum
Pi=Pf
1815*1.63+1310*(-1.05)=1815*0.245+1310*V
V=0.869 m/s
b)
Initial Kinetic energy
Ki=(1/2)*1815*1.632+(1/2)*1310*(-1.05)2=3133.3 J
final Kinetic energy
Kf=(1/2)*1815*0.2452+(1/2)*1310*0.8692=549 J
dK=3133.3-549=2584.3 J
