Explanation / Answer

A) Because the block is at rest, the acceleration is zero.

So the equation F=ma becomes F=0

for part a, take the sum of the forces in the y direction

Fy=(normal force)-weight=0

because lb is a measure of weight and not mass, you do not need tomultiply by the force of gravity

N=weight= 14.5 lb

B) F=N+T-W=0

N=W-T

N=14.5 - 10.5 = 4 lb

C) If we exchange the 10.5 lb wieght with a 38.5 lb weight, it will pull the 14.5 lb block into the air, This will result in the normal forcebeing exerted on the 14.5 lb block to become zero because it is no longer in contact with that floor.
