Question

A public health agency is considering a policy that requires everyone over the age of 18 to be screened for a sexually transmitted (STD) infectious disease each year. This policy would be used to determine those who are positive vs. those who are negative. Those who test positive will be required to undergo treatment and disclose their diseases status to any former and future sexual partners.

Q: Is this type of disease a suitable infection for mass screening? Why or why not? Be sure to include generally accepted information and use for screening tests. What considerations regarding test validity must be evaluated before selecting a test method for this screening program?

Explanation / Answer

Sexually transmitted diseases are those which can be transmitted to other people through sex. So if they are not screened properly there is a chance that many innocent people will fall prey to this condition. So we require a mass screening for this disease. People tested negative will not spread this disease but positive tested people can spread this disease if they are not properly treated. So by mass screening we can eradicate this disease eventually and reduce the spread of infection too. Pap smear test and hiv test are some of tests done for screening.
