3) Six capacitors below. The power soppl provides 29 capacitor has a parallell Note 1 F-1-10*F Cs Ca Ce a) What is the total (equivalent) capacitance (F) of this arrangement of capacitors? [10 pts) b) What is the charge stored in capacitor Ca? [10 points] Assuming the capacitors are identical except for plate area (same material, and gap size), rank the 6 capacitors from smallest plate area to largest plate area. Give the reason behind how you ranked the capacitances the way you choose. c) [5 pts] e a large4 Ar€6 8-ves the charges were reim sefead out

Explanation / Answer

C2 and C3 are in parallel and their combination is given as

C23 = C2 + C3 = 5 + 10 = 15 uF

C23 and C4 are in series and their combination is given as

C234 = C23 C4/(C23 + C4) = 15 x 30/(15 + 30) = 10 uF

C234 and C5 are in parallel and their combination is given as

C2345 = C234 + C5 = 10 + 8 = 18 uF

C1 , C2345 and C6 are in series and their combination is given as

1/Ceq = 1/C1 + 1/C2345 + 1/C6

1/Ceq = 1/3 + 1/18 + 1/36

Ceq = 2.4 uF

b)

Q = Ceq V = 2.4 x 20 = 48 uC

V1 = Q/C1 = 48/3 = 16 Volts

V6 = Q/C6 = 48/36 = 1.33 Volts

V234 = V - V1 - V6 = 20 - 16 - 1.33 = 2.67 Volts

Q234 = C234 V234 = 10 x 2.67 = 26.7 uC

Q4 = Q234 = 26.7 uC
