Question

Technical Physics: Heat&Light; Ou 3-Fall 2012 2. A beam of light traveling in air strikes a surface of a transparent material at an angle of incidence of 45 The angle of refraction in the material is 35°. (3 points) a) Draw a picture of the light's path below. LABFL the angle of incidence and angle of refraction: Air Transparent material b) What is the index of refraction of the material? c) What is the angle of reflection of light? d) What is the speed of the light in the transparent material?

Explanation / Answer

b)

Using Snell's Law :

n1*sin(45 deg) = n2*sin(35 deg)

here, n1 = 1 ;

n2 = index of refraction of the second material

So, 1*sin(45 deg) = n2*sin(35 deg)

So, n2 = 1.23 <------ answer

c)

angle of reflection = angle of incidence = 45 deg

d)

speed of light in the medium = c/n2

= 3*10^8/(1.23)

= 2.44*10^8 m/s <------ answer
