Question
Chapter 34, Problem 009 Spherical mirrors. Object O stands on the central axis of a spherical mirror. For this situation object distance is Ps+20 cm, the type of mirror is concave, and then the distance between the focal point and the mirror is 13 cm (without proper sign). Find (a) the radius of curvature r (including sign), (b) the image distance i, and (c) the lateral magnification m. Also determine whether the image is d rea or tua e inverted from o ect Oor nonin erted an on the same side of mirror as or on the opposite side. (a) Number (b) Number (c) Number Units Units UnitsExplanation / Answer
by mirror formula we have to use 1/p + 1/i = 1/f
Plug p = +20, f = +13
So i = p*f /(p-f) = +37.14
magnification = -i/p = -(-37.14)/20 = 1.857
a) radius of curvature, r = 2f = 2(+13 cm) = +26 cm.
b) The image distance is i = (1/f – 1/p)
–1
= (1/13 cm – 1/20 cm)–1
= +37.14 cm
C) lateral magnification m=1.875
D) image real
E) inverted
F)on the same side of the mirror!
