Question

Chapter 34, Problem 009 Spherical mirrors. Object O stands on the central axis of a spherical mirror. For this situation object distance is p, +21 cm, the type of mirror is concave, and then the distance between the focal point and the mirror is 11 cm (without proper sign). Find (a) the radius of curvature r (including sign), (b) the image distance i, and (c) the lateral magnification m. Also, determine whether the image is (d) real or virtual, (e) inverted from object O or noninverted, and (f) on the same side of the mirror as O or on the opposite side.

Explanation / Answer

do= 21cm, f=+ 11cm

a)

R=2f=2*11=22.0cm

b)

Use eqn,

1/f=1/do+1/di

Plugging values,

1/11=1/21+1/di

di= 23.1 cm

c)

Lateral magnification = M = -di/do = -23.1/22.0 = -1.05

d)

Positive sign of image distance says image is real.

e)

Negative sign os magnification says image is inverted.

f)

Positive sign of image distance says image on the same side of the mirror.
