Question

A gaseous mixture containing 50 mol% hydrogen and 50 mol% acetaldehyde (C2H4O) is initially contained in a rigid container at a total pressure of 760 mmHg absolute. The formation of ethanol occurs according to C2H4O + H2 ? C2H6O. After some time, it was noted that the total pressure in the vessel had dropped to 700 mmHg absolute. Calculate the degree of completion of the reaction, at that time, under the following assumptions: (a) all reactants and products are in the gaseous state, and (b) the gaseous mixtures were at the same temperature when the pressures were measured.

Explanation / Answer

plz give a lifesaver rating....:) PV=nRT ASSUME n=NO. OF MOLE of H2 = no. of moles of C2H4O therefore 2nRT/V = 760 -------(1) after reaction of x moles of H2 : total no. of moles in the container = 2n - 2x +x = 2n - x therefore (2n - x)RT/V = 700 substituting values from (1) : (2n - x)760 / 2n = 700 this gives : x/n = 3/19 degree of completion = 100 x 3 / 19 = 15.78 %
