Question
This is a discovery lab. That means we will use the lab period to introduce some material that we will see in lecture. Lab 8 is a general introduction to the lab equipment. We will also review some math properties you should already know and see how they apply to circuit analysis.
1.) Define Alternating Current:
2.) When dealing with AC current, we typically use sine and cosine waves. Identify the peak of the wave below and the trough of the wave below.
3.) Another property we use is frequency. Frequency (f) is the number of cycles per second. We measure frequency in units of Hertz, (Hz). Frequency is the inverse of the time for one complete cycle. We call the time for one complete cycle the period (T) and measure in units of time. A complete cycle includes every possible value that repeats. Based on the diagram above what is the period for one complete cycle?
4.) What is the frequency of the signal?
Measuring AC signals we run into some difficulties.
5.) What is the average value of the signal shown above? Why would this not be useful?
6.) Using the average won%u2019t work very will. We use some other values. We use Peak to Peak voltage, Vpp, Peak Voltage, Vp, and we use RMS voltage. We will discuss RMS voltage in more detail in class. What is the peak voltage and peak to peak voltage for the signal shown above?
In the lab we will use an oscilloscope to measure to obtain measurements for an AC signal.
Explanation / Answer
answer 1) AC current is current that changes in accordance to time . the frequency of ac current is 50Hz in india and 60 Hz in USA.
Answer 2) peak value of AC signal shown in figure is 1 Volt
peak to peak value is 2 volt P-P
Answer 3) According to above signal time period is 7 seconds
Answer4) f=1/T=1/7=0.142Hz
Answer5) Average value =Vpeak/3.14=0.318Volt
Answer6) peak to peak value is 2 volt P-P
