Question
You run a pet store. Many people have come in and bought blue parakeets. You want to save money so you are going to breed your existing parakeets to produce as many blue offspring as possible. You still have green, blue , yellow and white parakeets in stock. Assume the green , blue and yellow in stock are homozygous and heterozygous in genotype, so you have many choices. You select a heterozygous green male to be one member of the breeding pair, because he is very friendly to people. What color female would you select as his mate?Is the female parakeet homozygous or heterozygous in genotype?
Explanation / Answer
Y=yellow B = blue so... YY = yellow bird, homozygous YB = green bird, heterozygous BB = blue bird, homozygous thus... male: YB female: BB and... 75% of offspring should be blue, 25% green my only question is what's with the white bird? maybe doesn't make any pigment... okay so lets call it WW in that case, if you mate YB with WW then only 50% of offspring would be blue so that's probably not the answer anyway. in summary... male YB heterozygous female BB homozygous gives you the following offspring YB - 25% BB - 75%
