Question

Directions: Consider the structure in Fig. 1. Determine all theinternal forces in all the members.

Provide axial force values for two-force members (specifywhether in tension or compression).

Provide axial, shear, and moment diagrams for the remainingmembers. The following directions

will assist you:

1. Solve the frame to obtain the forces acting at the supportsand between all the members:

(a) Determine which members are two force members.

(b) Calculate resultants for both distributed loads.

(c) Consider global equilibrium to determine the forces at A andF.

(d) Consider the top piece to solve for the remainingunknowns.

2. For each frame member (each member that is not atwo-force member):

(a) Draw a free body diagram (with the original distributed load- not the resultant). Draw

member ABCD horizontally with A at the left end.

(b) Draw axial force, shear, and moment diagrams - determine thevalues of all peaks.

3. State the force (both magnitude and direction) in alltwo-force members.

Explanation / Answer

At first u must remove the support from Points A &F. Then replace it by horizontal & vertical reactionforce. Then take moments about A point, to find out vertical reactionforce at F point. Then take moments about F point to find out vertical reactionforce at A point. Now move frame wise (one frame must be considered individually& its ends are replaced by reactions & moments) In this way u will be able to find out the shear force &bending moment equation. Now u can draw shear force & bending moment diagramframe wise.
