Question

A steel conveyor bridge as shown in Figure 1 is used to transfer iron ore in a mine. The bridge is made of steel trusses and is square in section. It is simply supported at A and B where there are portal frames to transfer lateral wind loads from the top truss to the supports. In order to standardise the fabrication, all the chords are to be made of one section and all the web members of the vertical trusses are to be made of another section. Similarly, all the web members of the top horizontal truss are to be made of one section size.

The bridge is supporting the following loads:

- Bridge self weight: 10kN/m

- Conveyor belt and associated components: 10kN/m

- Iron ore: 20kN/m

- Belt tension acting on the entire bridge: 600kN

- Lateral wind load of 5kN/m (5kN per meter length of bridge).

Determine using approximate methods of analysis and appropriate load combinations:

(a) The ultimate design loads for the critical top and bottom chords of the vertical trusses. (b) The ultimate design loads for the critical vertical and inclined web members of the

vertical trusses.

(c) The ultimate design loads for the critical web member of the top horizontal truss.
