Estimate the liquid volume of an aeration tank (units of m^-3) required to treat the following wastewater to a BOD effluent standard of 30.0 mg L^-1 and a suspended solids effluent standard of 30 mg L^-1.

Wastewater flow rate = 0.4 m^3 s^-1

Influent BOD = 188 mg L^-1

The influent BOD is reduced by 32.0% in the primary tank

Assume an MLVSS of 2000 mg/L

Assume the following values for the growth constants: Ks = 100mg/L BOD ; u = 2.5/day ; kd = 0.050/day ; Y = 0.5 mg VSS/mg BOD removed

(Hint: First calculate the BOD leaving the primary tank.
