Question
2.) A MSW landfill is being designed to handle solid waste generated by Binford at a rate of 50 Mg/d. It is expected that the waste will be delivered by compactor truck on a 5d/week basis. the density as spread is 122 kg/m^3. it will be spread in 0.50 m layers and compacted to 0.25m. assuming three such lifts per day and a daily cover of 0.15m, determine the followign
a) annual volume of lanfill comsumed in m^3, and
b) daily horizontal area covered by the solid waste, ignore soil volume between stacks.
2) estimate the theoretical production of landfill gas (CH4 only) from the degradation of 20.3 kg of rapidly decomposable MSW. asssume the density of methane is 0.7177 kg/m^3.
Explanation / Answer
a).
or 1 MGD = 22.8245*60*60*24 = 1972036.8 m^3/d
or in one week total soild waste delivered = 1972036.8*5= 9860184 m^3/week
1 year= 52 weeks
therefore, for annual volume of landfill consumed= 9860184*52 = 512729568 m^3
b).
volume of waste = 1972036.8 m^3/d
it is assumed that three such lifts per day and a daily cover of 0.15m.
that means 1972036.8 m^3 waste cover of 0.15 m daily.
therefore, area covered, A = 1972036.8/0.15 = 13146912 m^2 area per day.
horizontal area covered= 13146912 m^2 per day.
c).
volume of waste = 1972036.8 m^3/d
