Question
A set of 8 Christmas-tree light bulbs forms a parallelcircuit. Each bulb draws 10 watts. When attached to adirect current supply of 120V. What value of current doeseach bulb draw? What is the total current drawn by thebulbs? If one bulb burns out, does the current through eachremaining bulb increase, decrease or remain the same? A set of 8 Christmas-tree light bulbs forms a parallelcircuit. Each bulb draws 10 watts. When attached to adirect current supply of 120V. What value of current doeseach bulb draw? What is the total current drawn by thebulbs? If one bulb burns out, does the current through eachremaining bulb increase, decrease or remain the same?Explanation / Answer
So Current through each bulb = Power / Voltage = 10 / 120 A =0.0833 ATotal current drawn by 8 bulbs = 8* 0.0833 A = 0.666A[Since the bulbs are all in parallel, the current through each ofthem gets added to give net current ]
If one bulb burns out, the other bulbs will continue to glowand each of them will draw 0.0833 A of current because thepower and voltage ratings remain the same. So the net current will drop, but the current through each ofthe remaining bulbs will remain unchanged.
I hope this helps.
