Question

A. Of all the structures above, which can be found as parts of membrane lipid molecules? List all.

B. Assemble some or all the structural parts you choose in A into 2 complete lipid structures for your membrane. The parts may be used more than once, but your 2 complete lipids cannot belong within the same class (for example, they cannot both be sphingolipids). Remember: you are living in the Antarctic (see bolded statement next to the number 1 on page 1).

C. What other molecules would you incorporate into your lipid bilayer and list all the functions of these molecules.

1. You are a bacterium living in the antarctic (very very cold). Given all the structures below: OH OH HO NH O-P-O OH O-P-O- H2N OH O-P-O H2N

Explanation / Answer

A) The plasma membrane of the bacterium which survives in the antarctic region must contains increase amount of unsaturated fatty acid which prevent the membrane freezing so the the structures which are listed above marked as F, H, I and J can be found as a part of lipid membrane.

B).Arachidic acid (F)

trans- oelic acid (I)

cis-oelic acid (J)

alpha-linolenic acid (H) are found in the lipid bilayer of the bacterium which is found in the antarctic region. As the membrane of the bacterium which survives in the antarctic region, it must contains more unsaturated fatty acid then saturated fatty acids.

C). The other structure of the plasma membrane are the integral and peripheral proteins which are involves in the transportation and other functions of the plasma membrane like phagocytosis, pinocytosis, exocytosis and endocytosis.
