Question
A. List four types of transformers in a power system. Briefly explain their characteristics. B. The two important electrical ratings of a transformer included in the name plate data are: voltage ratio and the apparent power. For example, a name plate data (single phase transformer) may read "5 kVA, 4 kV/120 V." From this data, extract additional (six more) information that characterizes the transformer. C. A single phase 120/240V transformer has the following parameters. R_1 = 0.5 Ohm, R_2 = 1 Ohm, X_1 = 2 Ohm, X_2 = 6 Ohm, R_0 = 500 Ohm, X_0 = 1.5 k Ohm. A load of 10 Ohm at 0.8 pf lagging is connected across the high voltage terminals of the transformer. The voltage measured across the load side is 230 V. Compute the following: a. The load voltage referred to the primary side. b. The currents of the primary and secondary windings c. The source voltage d. The voltage regulation e. The load power f. The efficiency of the transformer.Explanation / Answer
There are four types of it which is mentioned below
(first ) Step Up Transformer and Step Down Transformer - Generally used for stepping up and down the voltage level of power in transmission and distribution power system network.
(second ) Three Phase Transformer and Single Phase Transformer - Former is generally used in three phase power system as it is cost effective than later. But when size matters, it is preferable to use a bank of three single phase transformer as it is easier to transport than one single three phase transformer unit.

(third) Electrical Power Transformer, Distribution Transformer and Instrument Transformer - Power transformers are generally used in transmission network for stepping up or down the voltage level. It operates mainly during high or peak loads and has maximum efficiency at or near full load. Distribution transformer steps down the voltage for distribution purpose to domestic or commercial users. It has good voltage regulation and operates 24 hrs a day with maximum efficiency at 50% of full load. Instrument transformers include C.T and P.T which are used to reduce high voltages and current to lesser values which can be measured by conventional instruments.
(four) Two Winding Transformer and Auto Transformer - Former is generally used where ratio between high voltage and low voltage is greater than 2. It is cost effective to use later where the ratio between high voltage and low voltage is less than 2.
