Question

Select, giving reasons, the most suitable choice of temperature sensor for use in the following scenarios: a) Measuring the temperature of a printed circuit board in a computer. b) Measuring the temperature in a glass melting furnace that operates at temperatures of up to 1600 degreeC. c) Reliable measurement of the temperature in a pharmaceutical process over the range 0 to 300 degreeC and within notequalto0.5 degreeC. d) Measuring the water temperature in a dishwasher. e) Measuring the rate of change of temperature at a particular spot on the cylinder head on an internal combustion engine. f) Measuring temperature of the behavior of metals at very low temperatures (123 to 70 K) in a cryogenics laboratory.

Explanation / Answer

(a) Computer circuit board usally does not exceed a few degrees, say 80 degrees. So a digital IC sensor will be appropriate due to its cost, linearity, digital interface, etc.

(b) Glass melting furnace generally operates at higher temprature. So thermocouple of type B will be sufficient as it measures temprature in the range 20- 1800 degrees.

(c) For this range and greater accuracy thermistor will be suffiient. It has moderate thermal response and price and good stability.

(d) To measure room temprature, a normal laboratory mercury in glass thermometer is sufficient.
