Question

Select two living female leaders, two living male leaders, two deceased female leaders, and two deceased male leaders to study and include in your assignment. Take your time selecting these leaders. Challenge yourself not to “just” pick the obvious (John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, etc.). The creativity (and appropriateness) with which you select leaders will be considered in your evaluation. You may want to think about your academic major and identify key leaders in that field; you may want to consider issues that are important to you personally and select leaders accordingly; you may want to select a wide variety of leaders to compare and contrast).

2. List all of your leaders in a way that enables you to brainstorm/record their individual characteristics and contributions. (Think “giant poster” with “post-it” notes tacked up under a given leader’s name). For each leader, list the leadership characteristics and key contributions associated with each. Also list the way that the leaders were (or are) perceived by the public. What adjectives are associated with these people?

3. Think about the association between characteristics that you have identified with each of your leaders and the masculinity/femininity of these traits? Do the leaders tend to have a balance of stereotypically masculine and feminine traits, or are they more heavily weighted toward one or the other?

Observation of adjectives associated with the leaders – It is odd that a woman is expected to be gentle, calm and composed and the men in this list are famous for possessing those very qualities. Conversely, men are expected to be fearless, outspoken and formidable when it is the females in the list above who possess these qualities. It is certain that the people in the list above gained the attention of the world by simply not sticking to their expected stereotypes and actually fighting the good fight to keep their convictions alive.

In all cases above, regardless of the gender of the people, they have all exhibited a great focus in their work be it in journalism, medicine, politics, religion etc. They have broken the mould of the existing standards of their field and dared to think differently, thus avoiding a static view of things.

Furthermore, some of the individuals listed above are no strangers to bullets being fired at them or to meet death as a result of their work. Yet, the attitudes they bear upon opposition has been one of a nonchalant sense of calm because they have focused on the larger goal and not the oppressor in their pant.
