Question

Consider electric circuits below and find: total resistance potential difference across the resistor R_4 current through resistor R_2 total power dissipated by the circuit power dissipated by R_3 indicate on the drawing where and how would you connect instrument to measure potential difference delta V across resistor R_1 and current 1 through R_3. Indicate the name of each instrument (A, V) on it. R_1 = 12 ohm; R_2 = 16.0 ohm; R_3 = 24 ohm; R_4 = 18 ohm, R_4 = 12 ohm. The voltage of the source is 12 V.

Explanation / Answer

2(A) R1 and R2 are in parallel connection,

1/R' = 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/12 + 1/16

R' = 6.86 ohm

R3, R4 and R5 are also in parallel.

1/R" = 1/R3 + 1/R4 + 1/R5 = 1/24 + 1/18 + 1/12

R" = 5.54 ohm

now R' and R" are in series.

Req = R' + R" = 6.86 + 5.54 = 12.4 ohm

(B) current through battery, I = 12/ 12.4 = 0.968 A

PD across R4 = PD across R" = 0.968 x 5.54 = 5.36 Volt .......Ans

(C) PD across R2 = 12 - 5.36 = 6.64 Volt

i2 = 6.64 / 16 = 0.415 A

(D) P = V I = 12 x 0.968 = 11.62 W

(E) PD across R3 = PD across R" = 5.36 Volt

P = V^2 / R = 5.36^2 / 24 = 1.2 W

(F) to measure PD:

connect V in parallel with R1 and R2.

to measure current:

connect A in series with R3.
