Question

Given: Crane ABCDE is attached to the ground with a fixed constraint at E and a cable at F. The weight of ABC is 3.6 kN. The tension in the cable is 22 kN. Pulleys C and D are frictionless. Find: Create a PC-generated graph for the value of the reaction moment at E (y-axis, CCW moment is +) when the 9.4 kN load ranges from x = 1.0 m to 7.0 m (to the left of DBE). Be sure to include labels for the axes and corresponding units. Show supporting work for at least one load location. Determine the maximum magnitude (absolute value) of the reaction moment and the location of the load for a reaction moment of zero. Question: how does increasing the cable tension affect the reaction (force and couple moment) at E? For your diagram, draw a FBD of the system.

Explanation / Answer

First of all let us make FBD

Now we will take the moment of each force about E
We have to make net moment zero about E therefore
taking anticlockwise moment as negative and clockwise moment as positive
-(3.6*2.6)+(22*4cos15.94)+(7*22(Sin15.94))-(4*22cos53.13)-(1.5*22Sin53.13)+(22*1.5)-9.4x=0
therefore on calcualtion we will get the value of x = 4.07 m
hence when the 9.4 kN applied at a distance of 4.07 m from the B or E then the reaction at moment at E will be zero.
Similarly we can make a plot by varying the value of x in above equation.
that will give the different value of moment.
