Question

Consider a tension member that is part of the structure of a personal aircraft. For a preliminary materials selection, assume that the member has a square cross section of side h that may vary with material choice. The length L is fixed. There are two functional requirements. First, a force P must be resisted such that there is a safety factor X against the material exceeding the failure strength. Second, the deflection due to force P must not exceed a given length change delta L. Make a compromise choice among the materials provided on the last page that considers these requirements along with light weight, cost, and any other considerations that you believe are important. Briefly justify your choice. Use any mathematical software (excel, mathcad, matlab, etc.) to pjerform the calculation. Consider the beam of circular cross section as shown in figure. The radius r of the cross section may vary with material, and the beam is required to have length L, carry load P, and safety factor against failure X. (a) Perform the materials selection for minimum weight; (b) Calculate the beam radius r that is required for each material. Assume values of P = 200 N, L = 100 mm, and X = 2. Use any mathematical software (excel, mathcad, matlab, etc.) to perform the calculation. A composite material is made with epoxy (Em = 3.5 GPa) and 40%, by volume, unidirectional graphite fibers. If the composite properties are Ex = 320 GPa and Ev = 5.5 GPa, estimate the fiber modulus using rule-of-mixture equation.
