Question

A pump is used to draw water from a mountain lake, where the local acceleration of gravity is 32.0 ft/s2, up to a reservoir for a lodge. As shown in the figure, the exit of the pump is 90 ft above the inlet. At the exit, the mass flow rate of water is 10 lbm/s. If the pump consumes electricity at a rate of 1.68 hp, determine the rate of heat transfer between the pump and its surroundings in hp and Btu/min. Assume the pump is operating at steady state. Neglect changes in water temperature, pressure and kinetic energy between the inlet and exit of the pump.

Explanation / Answer

I have solved question in SI units.

power required to pump water = ( M G H ) / time = (M/time).G.H = 4.53kg/sec * 27.4 m * 9.8 m/s^2 =1216 Watts

= 1217/746 hp = 1.63 hp (1 hp=746 watts)

energy dissipated as heat transfer = 1.68-1.63 = 0.05 hp ANSWER
