Question

A pulley with mass Mp and a radius Rp is attached to the ceiling, in a gravity field of 9.81 m/s2 and rotates with no friction about its pivot. Mass M2 is larger than mass m1. The quantities Tn and g are magnitudes.

Possible answers are: True, False, Greater Than, Less Than, or Equal To:

T3 is ..... T1 + T2

m1g + M2g + Mpg is ..... T3.

The magnitude of the acceleration of M2 is ..... that of m1.

T2 is ..... M2g.

T2 is ..... T1;

The C.M. of Mp+M1+M2 does not accelerate.

I am having a lot of trouble with this problem. I have tried it multiple different ways and still cannot get it right! Would somebody mind explaining this please?

Explanation / Answer

Here are the equations M2*g-T2=M2*a T1-M1*g=M1*a (T2-T1)*Rp=I*a a=a/r I=Mp*Rp^2/2
