Question
The displacement transmissibility of a base excited oscillator is given by Td = e-j theta tau Its amplitude is plotted below. The displacement transmissibility for = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5. If you can actively adjust the damping of the suspension system of your vehicle, how would you do it qualitatively to achieve a comfortable ride, assuming that the road roughness is a harmonic waveform. Explain your choices with the theory. When you drive at a speed that makes your suspension rattle suggesting r 1. When you are speeding.Explanation / Answer
a) when r = 1, displacement transmissibility is equal to one irrespective of the damping factor chosen as show in the graph. Hence any value of damping factor can be chosen. it can be 0.1 or 0.3 or 0.5. they all will produce same effect. b) when we are speeding up frequency ratio r increases, and more uncomfortable would be the journey. however as the damping factor increases displacement transmissibility decreases. So, higher value of it should be choose i.e damping factor = 0.5
