Question

Need some serious help on this problem please show work and units. My work was way off.

Air undergoes an expansion from 8 bar, 16 degree C to 1 bar. The expansion process is internally reversible with pv1.06 = constant. Neglect kinetic and potential energy effects and assume ideal gas behavior. Determine the temperature of the exiting air, in degree C; the work, in kJ/kg the heat transfer, in kJ/kg; Also sketch the process on p-v and T-s diagrams and associate areas on the diagrams with work and heat transfer.

Explanation / Answer

a) PV^1.06 = const k=1.06 T2/T1 = (P2/P1)^((k-1)/k) => T2 = 289 * (1/8)^(0.06/1.06) = 256.91 K b) Work Done = V (P1-P2) Calculating V : V= RT/P = .287 *289 /800000 = 1.037*10^-4 m3 Work Done = 1.037*10^-4 *700000 = 0.0725 KJ/Kg c) Q = h+w = CpdT +w = 1.004 (289-256.91) + 0.0725 =32.291 KJ/Kg d) This will be a st line curve (parallel to temperature axis) extending from 289K to 256.91K (S will be constant)
