Question

jon has decided to install a wind turbine at the top of the ridge. Assume the wind velocity is hitting the turbine at a constant 10ft/sec.

A) what additional information would you need to determine the shaft power produced by the turbine?

( Explain only - you do not need to determine numbers for this) Clearly explain the physical meaning of each item you mention.

B) Explain how you would then calculate the shaft power?

C) what exactly is shaft power for a wind turbine?

D) what would the incoming and outgoing velocity triangles look like for this turbine?

( AGAIN NO NUMBERS ARE REQUIRED!!!! JUST AN EXPLAINATION)

Explanation / Answer

A) you need swept area let it be A

and density let it be rho

and u have the wind speed

B) it is obtained by the formula

Power=0.5*rho*A*v^3

v is the velocity

if u need derivation i can provide

C) exact shaft power is the power obtained*power efficiency

called betz limit or betz law

its max value is 0.59

so exact power =0.59*the above obtained power

D)for this do u need diagram

plz comment
