The coat colour in mice is influence by the amount of melanin secreted by the cells. Melanocytes make two forms of melanin, eumelanin and pheomelanin. An incresed secretion of eumelanin leads to darker coat colour while an increase in pheomelanin is indicated by a lighter coat colour. The melanocyte-1 receptor (MC1R) controls the secreation of eumelanin which enables the mice to have a dark coat.
A homology in the gene for MC1R can be selected in evolution as natural selection, provided that the coat colour provides an effective camouflage against the given environmental background. Thus a huge amount of polymorphism can be seen within the MC1R gene in genetic evolution suggesting that the natural selection for a particular kind of gene pattern depends upon the environmental conditions.
