Question

A 15,000 lb plane lands on the deck of an aircraft carrier at a speed of 125mi/hr relative to the carrier and is brought to a stop in 2.8s.  Determine the average horizontal force exerted by the carrier on the plane a) if the carrier is at rest, b) if the carrier is moving at a speed of 18 knots in the same direction as the airplane (1 knot = 1.152 mi/hr)The answers are 30.5 kips for both but i could only figure out part a,  (15000/32.2)*(183.333ft/s) + F*2.8=0..............F=30,500 lbs

How do i solve part b?

Explanation / Answer

125mi/hr = 201.168 km/hr

= 55.88 m/s

20.736 mi/hr = 33.37 km/hr

= 9.27 m/s

distance in which it stopped,

v = u + at

0 = (55.88-9.27) + a*2.8

a = 16.65 m/s2

force = ma

= 113284 N

= 25467 lbf
