Answer all parts for 100% feedback !!!
(4%) Problem 1: A laser beam has a velocity in vacuum of c-3 x 108 m/s. A student runs an experiment in which a liquid is placed in a tank of length L 10.1 m. The time i takes for the beam to make it across the tank is timed to bet59 ns 50% Part (a) write an expression for the liquid's index of refraction, n Grade Summa Deductions Potential ry n= 0% 100% Submissions Attempts remaining: 5 (5% per attempt) detailed view END DELCLEAR Submit Hint I give up! Hints: 290 deduction per hint. H ints remaining: 2 Feedback: 2% deduction per feedback 5096 Part (b) Numerically, what is this index?Explanation / Answer
Part (a) -
Suppose, velocity of light in the liquid = v = L/t
velocity of light in the vaccum = c
Now, index of refraction of the liquid, n = velocity of light in the vaccum / velocity of light in the liquid
=> n = c / v = c / (L/t) = (c*t) / L
Part (b) -
Put the values in the above expression -
n = (3 x 10^8 x 59 x 10^-9) / (10.1) = 1.75
