Question

Question 8 10 pts The figure shows four penguins that are being playfully pulled along very slippery (frictionless) ice by a curator. The masses of three of the penguins and the tension in two of the cords are m? 12 kg, m3 16.7 kg, ma-21.5 kg, T2 = 119 N, and T4-218 N. Find the mass m2 of the penguin that is not given. Ta Question 10 10 pts Imagine a landing craft approaching the surface of Callisto, one of Jupiters moon. If the engine provides and upward force (thrust) of 3.24 kN, the craft descends at a constant speed. If the engine provides only 2.57 kN, the craft accelerates downward at 0.41 m/s2. What is the magnitude of the free-fall acceleration (in m/s2) near the surface of Callisto? (Hint: Find the weight and the mass of the craft)

Explanation / Answer

8)

Let's look at the last two penguins. Then if we let the mass of the unknown penguin be m, we find that

119 N = (12 kg + m) a

and then looking at the whole system of four penguins,

218 N = (12 kg + m + 16.7 kg + 21.5 kg) a

where a is the acceleration of the four penguin system.

Then if we divide both equations, we find:

218/119 = (12 kg + m + 16.7 kg + 21.5 kg)/ (12 kg + m)

=> m = 33.92 kg
