Question

My A railroad car moving at a speed of 3.48 m/s overtakes, collides and couples with two coupled ralroad cars moving in the same direction at 1.40 m/s. All cars have a mass of mass 1.4x 1a kg. (a) Determine the speed (in m/s) of the three coupled cars after the colflision. (Give your answer to at least 2 decimal places.) 207m/s (b) Determine the kinetic energy (in 3) lost in the collision Knowing the mass of each car and its speed before and after the colision, can you determine the initial and final kinetic anergy and then the kinetic energy lost in the collision? 3

Explanation / Answer

B) loss in kinetic energy,

the total loss of kinetic energy is given by subtracting thefinal energy by the initial TOTAL energy.

k = 1/2 * m * v2

so [(1/2)(3 * 1.4 * 104)(2.07)2] - [(1/2)(1.4 * 104)(3.48)2 + (2)(1/2)(1.4*104)(1.40)2] = -22229.9 J
