Question
3. [8 points] Consider 4 conducting loops sitting flat on a sheet. Each loop sits in a magnetic field with a magnitude that is either increasing or decreasing with time. Find the direction (Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise) of the induced current for (a) the first loop that has an increasing magnetic field that points out of the sheet, (b) the second loop that has a decreasing magnetic field that points out of the page, (c) the third loop that has an increasing magnetic field that points into the page, and (d) the fourth loop that has a decreasing magnetic field that points into the page. Motivate each answer with WORDS. Answers without an explanation will not receive credit.Explanation / Answer
(a)
The induced current should be such that it opposes the increase in the magnetic flux(in this case the magnetic field is increased thereby increasing the flux). So the induced current flows in the clockwise direction.
(b)
This time the flux is decreasing (due to the decreasing magnetic field), so the induced current flows in the counterclockwise direction so that it opposes the decrease in the field.
(c)
The induced current should be such that it opposes the increase in the magnetic flux(in this case the magnetic field is increased thereby increasing the flux). So the induced current flows in the counterclockwise direction.
(d)
This time the flux is decreasing (due to the decreasing magnetic field), so the induced current flows in the clockwise direction so that it opposes the decrease in the field.?
