Question

Chapter 20, Problem 047 Your answer is partially correct. Interactive Solution 20.4Z provides one approach to problems like this one. Three resistors are connected in series across a battery. The value of each resistance and its maximum power rating are as follows: 4.2 and 15.1 W, 25.1 and 12.5 w, and 21.4 and 11.8 W (a) What is the greatest voltage that the battery can have without one of the resistors burning up? (b) How much power does the battery deliver to the circuit in (a)? (a) Number Units v (b) Number Units W LINK TO TEXT SCORE Maximum Point Potential: 1.0 Points Earned: 0.50 CANCEL Copyright © 2000, 2018 by )chn wley & Sons, Inc. or related companies. Explanation / Answer

Resistor 1 :

i2 = 15.1 / 4.2

= 1.896 A

Resistor 2 :

i2 = 12.5 / 25.1

= 0.7056 A

Resistor 3 :

i2 = 11.8 / 21.4

= 0.742 A

the total resistance is = 4.2 + 25.1 + 21.4 = 50.7 Ohm

total voltage = i R = 0.7056 X 50.7 = 35.77 volts

total power = i2 R = 0.70562 X 50.7 = 25.24 W
