Question
PHYS1114 Benton Spring 2018 OSU Physics Dept. 10° with respect to the surface of the planet. How long did it take for the ball to reach the end of the track and what was its final velocity? 7. In a human cannon ball stunt at the circus, a circus performer, the "Great DisAstro," is fired out of an air cannon that is 20 m long. The mass of the "Great DisAstro" is 60 kg. If the average force on the "Great DisAstro" while he is being shot through the cannon barrel is 3500 N, determine his average acceleration inside the barrel and his velocity when he emerges from the end of the barrel. 8. In an old warehouse, an 800 kg elevator is suspended from a worn steel cable that can withstand a maximum tension of 26,000 N. If you load the elevator with 1400 kg of cargo, what is the maximum value at which the elevator can accelerate upwards so that the cable doesn't break?Explanation / Answer
8)
let m = 800 kg
M = 1400 kg
Tmax = 26000 N
let a_max is the maximum acceleration at which the steel cable can withstand.
now use,
T_max = (m + M)*(g + a)
T_max/(m + M) = g + a
==> a = T_max/(m + M) - g
= 26000/(800 + 1400) - 9.8
= 2.02 m/s^2
