Question

PHYS 150 Test #1 page 3 7) For parts a and b, assume that a car accelerates from rest up to a speed of 28 m/s in a time of 8.0 seconds. a) What is the average acceleration of the car during the 8.0 seconds? (5] 3.5 m/s2 b) If the acceleration were constant (and equal to the above average) during the 8.0 seconds, how far did the car go during the 8.0 seconds? [5] 112 m. c) If the car had an initial velocity of 15 m/s instead of 0 m/s, but still accelerated at the value in part (a) for 8.0 seconds, what would the final speed be after the 8.0 seconds? 151 43 m/s

Explanation / Answer

a) Here,

initial velocity, u=0

final velocity, v= 28 m/s

time, t= 8 sec

Average acceleration, a = (v–u)/t = 28/8 m/s² = 3.5 m/s²

b) Here,

acceleration, a= 3.5 m/s²

initial velocity, u=0

time, t= 8 sec

distance traveled, s= ut+½at² = 0*8 + 0.5*3.5*8² = 112 m

c) Here,

initial velocity, u= 15 m/s

acceleration, a= 3.5 m/s²

time, t= 8 sec

Final speed, v= u+ at = 15 + 3.5*8 = 43 m/s
