Question

Conservation of Energy 8. A toy train of mass m is at the top of a hill traveling to the right with a velocity vs. It rolls down an incline of height h, rolls a short distance on a straight track, and strikes a bumper containing a spring of spring constant K. The distances are as indicated on the figure. The train is just rolling, not powered. LA L 2 a. Assuming that friction and the rotational energy of the wheels can be ignored, describe the energy transformations of the system, starting with the instant the train is at the very top of the hill until it comes to a stop at the bumper.

Explanation / Answer

a. as train comes down, then its gravitational PE will convert into kinetic energy .

on level ground, KE and PE both will remain same.

as it hit bumper, all its Ke will be stored into potential energy of spring.

(c) applying energy conservation,

m gh = m v^2 /2

v = sqrt(2 g h )
