13. I + 10 points SetPSE9 24 P034M. A cylindrical shell of radius 7.00 cm and length 2.30 m has its charge uniformly distributed on its curved surface. The magnitude of the electric field at a point 23.7 cm radially outward from its axis (measured from the midpoint of the shell) is 36.0 kN/C. My Notes Ask Your Teacher (a) Find the net charge on the shell. nC (b) Find the electric field at a point 4.00 cm from the axis, measured radially outward from the midpoint of the shell. kN/C Need Help? Explanation / Answer

given

radius of cylinderical shell, r = 7 cm

length, l = 2.3 m

charge distrubuted uniformly over the surface

d = 23.7 cm, E = 36 kN/C

a. Net charg eon the shell = q

hence from gauss law

E*2*pi*d*l = q/epsilon

q = E*(4*pi*epsilon)*dl/2 = 36*10^3 0.237*2.3/2*8.98*10^9 = 1.09262*10^-6 C

b. at d = 4 cm

this point is inside the cylinderical shell

and all the charge is deposited on the outer surface of the shell

hence from gauss law

for gaussean surface at d = 4 cm, the charge enclosed is 0

hence electric field = E = 0 kN/C
