Question

Can you help me out with C and D

PROBLEM 11 a= 2.45 m/s* The open tank shown is initially full of water, but is shown after accelerating horizontally (direction is parallel to the long side) for a while at the constant rate shown. Determine (a) the angle the plane of the water makes to the horizontal, (b) the amount of water spilled over the edge, (c) the force acting on each of the square sides (d) the force required to maintain this acceleration. Neglect the mass of the material in the tank. : 2 m 2 m (Ans: (a) 14.04°, (b) 4 m3, (c) left side 39228 N, right side 9807 N, (d) 29400 N.) 4 m

Explanation / Answer

a. from the given data

ax = 2.45 m/s/s

hence

angle of the plane of eater with horizontal = phi

cot(phi) = g/ax

hence

phi = 14.022 deg

b. amount of water spilled = original volume - new volume = volume of empty portion

dV = 2*2*4 - 4*2*(2 - 4*tan(phi)) - 0.5*4*4tan(phi)*2 = 4.03 m^3

c. force acting on each surface = Fl, Fr

now, d(Fl) = rho*g*y*dy*2

Fl = integrate(rho*g*y*2*dy) from y = 0 to y = 2

Fl = 1000*9.81*(4) = 39240 N

similiarly

Fr = 1000*9.81*((2 - 4*tan(phi))^2) = 9862.809216 N

d. Fnet = Fl - Fr = 29403 N
