Question
Why is no work being done?According to my professor if you are lifting a book at a constant velocity , work is being done even though the net force is 0... ok
A car is traveling down the highway at a constant velocity, is work being done?
He says no because the net force is 0
Now the road is not frictionless . I asked. Just like the book was being lifted against gravity , the car is traveling against friction. Both objects require a force to counter another force in order to maintain a constant velocity. Why is there no work being done in the situation with the car

Explanation / Answer
There is friction from the road surface. No doubt in that. This friction works in a direction opposite to that of the motion of the car. But countering this force, there is a force applied by the car in the forward direction due to which the car moves.
By Newton's 2nd Law of motion'
Fnet = ma
Here as the car moves at constant velocity, therefore a = 0
Thus, Fnet = 0
We know, W = Fnet. d
As Fnet = 0, so work W is also zero.
