Question

Question 1: Since we've been watching the winter Olympics... (25 points) Vladimir is skating to the right at constant (x, y) (0, H/2) (0, - rod, and the ro Vladimir and Evgenia have the same mass m. Find the linear velocity of the system's center of mass, and the angular velocity that Vladimir, Evgenia, and the rod spin at together. Give your answers as expressions in terms of m, H, and vo. velocity voR. Evgenia is standing at the coordinates H/2) he grabs his end of the rod. Vladimir and Evegnia start moving together, joined by the d (with the two of them holding onto the ends) also starts spinning. Assume tha holding a long, thin rod of negligible mass, when Vladimir reaches (x,y) (x,y)=(0,+/12) Evgenia Vladimir Origin "(x,y)=(0,-H/2)

Explanation / Answer

given
vladimir is skating to the right with speed vo i ( where i and ja re aunit vectors along x and y axis)
cooerinates of Evgenia = (0, H/2)
mass og both athleetes = m

now let linear velocity of center of mass be v
then from conservation of moemntum

2mv = mvo
v = vo/2 i ( to the right)

now, from conservaiton of angular moemntum about the center of mass
let the angular velocity be w
then

mH^2*w/2 = m*vo*H/2
w = vo/H
