Question

In 2008 the University of Washington football team trailed Brigham Young University 28-21 late in the 4th quarter. With only 2 seconds left on the game clock Washington quarterback Jake Locker ran for a touchdown, bringing the score to 28-27 with an extra point to follow. Controversially, Locker was assessed a 15- yard penalty for excessive celebration for throwing the ball into the air after scoring, moving the extra point from the 2 yard-line to the 17 yard-line. Washington missed the now much more difficult extra point and lost the game. You can see the play at https://youtu.be/Ap6Kn0dkbyY. From the video you can see that 2.9 s pass between when Locker throws the ball and when it hits him on its way back down. Assuming that the ball was thrown and then hit Locker again at the same height, how high did he throw the ball into the air?

Explanation / Answer

total time=2.9 sec

time up=time down(Acc to law of physics)

2.9/2=1.45 sec

WKT

v=u+at

0=u+(-9.8)×1.45

u=14.21 m/sec

By 2 eqn of motion

s=ut+1/2at^2

s=14.21+×1.45+1/2(-9.8)(1.45×1.45)

s=30.9 40metre
