Question
4.17b - Normal, Tension, and Other Examples of Forces Two teams of four members each engage in a tug of war. Each of the first team's members has an average mass of 60.0 kg and exerts an average force of 1317 N horizontally. Each of the second team's members has an average mass of 66.0 kg. The second term pulls with larger force so that the acceleration of the two terms is 0.190 m/s2. What is the average force exerted in the horizontal direction by each member of the second term? Submit Answer Tries 0/10Explanation / Answer
Total Force is 4(1317+x) N
(Since each team consists of four members)
Net is the difference, 15 N x 9 = 135 N
total mass is 4x60 + 4x66 = 504 kg
F = ma
a =0.190 m/s2 = F/m = F/504
Hence, F = 504 * 0.190 = 95.76 N
where the Force is the net force and m is the total mass
Total Force = 4(1317+x) = 95.76
Hence, 1317 + x = 23.94 = 24 (nearly)
So, x = 1317 – 24 = 1293N
Total force exerted by the four members of the second team = 1293 * 0.190 = 245.67 N
So, average force exerted by each member of the team = 245.67/4 = 61.42 N = 62N (nearly)
