8. a) Explain why the value of the ratio of principal heat capacities of gases, yP Cv depends upon the number of degrees of freedom of its molecules (where the number of degrees of freedom is the same as the number of quadratic energy terms for each molecule, which we have denoted 2a). +1 b) Show that c) What values of would you expect for single-component gases consisting of He, N NHs? d) What do you deduce from the fact that y for mercury vapor is 5/3?Explanation / Answer
a)
By law of equipartition , each motion (degree of freedom) gets 1/2kT energy.
By this theory we find that Cv is DOF/2 x R and Cp is (DOF + 2)/2 xR
b)
r = Cp/Cv = (DOF +2)/(DOF)
but DOF = 2a ... given
r = (2a + 2) / 2a
r = (a+1)/a
c)
He = monoatomic has DOF = 3
r = 5/3
N2 = diatomic has DOF = 5
r = 7/5
NH3 = polyatomic
It can have maximum 12 DOF
r = 14/12
d)
If Hg has r = 5/3, it is monoatomic
