Question

UNIT-17: Capacitance, PRE-LAB Name: ID# Course#1493 Section pre-lab is worth S points capacitor is discharged through a resistor, the area under the curve of currentl) ) As a vs. Time (t) will yield what? 2) The unit for capacitance is called a and it is designated by A graph of charge (q) vs. volts (V) should yield a linear line with the slope representing what quantity? 3) Identify and write the equation for th equivalent capacitance 4) e two circuits shown below to determine the total Determine an equation to find the equivalent capacitance of the circuit by combining the equations above. 5) CA 37

Explanation / Answer

1) The area under the plot of I vs t gives the amount total charge ( as current i = dq/dt )flown through the resistor while discharging the capacitor which means the equal amount of charge was stored in the capacitor before discharging.

2) Farad and F respectively.

3) for a capacitor with capacitance C, the amount of charge stored, Q =CV where V is the potential difference (in V). The slope of Q vs V plot (which is a linear plot) = dQ/dV = C (value of the capacitance) (Ans)

4) for the figure in the left side:

CA, CB and CC are connected in parallel. SO, Ceq = CA + CB + CC

for the figure in the right side:

CA, CB and CC are connected in series. SO, Ceq =((1/CA )+ (1/CB )+(1/ CC ))-1

5) capacitors CA and CB are in parallel. Ceq1 = (CA + CB ).

The parallel combination of capacitors CA and CB are in series with capactior Cc i.e. Ceq1 is in series with Cc.

Equivalent capacitance Ceq = (Ceq1 * Cc) /(Ceq1 + Cc) = ((CA + CB )*Cc) / (CA + CB +Cc) (Ans)
