Question

Three blocks are stacked on top of each other inside an elevator as shown in (Figure 1).Answer the following questions with reference to the eight forces defined as follows.
the force of the 3 kg block on the 2 kg block, F3on2,
the force of the 2 kg block on the 3 kg block, F2on3,
the force of the 3 kg block on the 1 kg block, F3on1,
the force of the 1 kg block on the 3 kg block, F1on3,
the force of the 2 kg block on the 1 kg block, F2on1,
the force of the 1 kg block on the 2 kg block, F1on2,
the force of the 1 kg block on the floor, F1onfloor, and
the force of the floor on the 1 kg block, Fflooron1.

Assume the elevator is moving upward at increasing speed. Rank the magnitude of the forces from largest to smallest.

Explanation / Answer

Answers:

the force of the 3 kg block on the 2 kg block, F3 on 2 is

3 x 9.8 = 29.4N

the force of the 2 kg block on the 3 kg block, F2 on 3 is

3 x 9.8 = 29.4N

the force of the 3 kg block on the 1 kg block, F3 on 1 is

No contact between these two blocks, so answer : 0 N

the force of the 1 kg block on the 3 kg block, F1 on 3

No contact between these two blocks , so answer = 0 N

the force of the 2 kg block on the 1 kg block, F2 on1 is

29.4 + 2 x9.8 = 49N

the force of the 1 kg block on the 2 kg block, F1on 2 is

29.4 + 2 x9.8 = 49N

the force of the 1 kg block on the floor, F1on floor is

6 x9.8 = 58.8N

the force of the floor on the 1 kg block, Ffloor on 1 is

6 x9.8 = 58.8 N

Magnitudes of all forces are ordered as Ffloor >F2 on 1 >F 3 on 2 >F 3 on 1
