Question

. PRE-LAB 1) In your own words, describe what electric potential is. 2) What is meant by an electric potential difference? 3) An electron is accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 120V, what is the electron's final speed? Please answer the following questions and turn them in at the beginning of the lab session: a) Is it possible for two equipotential surfaces (or lines in the two-dimensional case) to cross? 4) Explain. b) Is it possible for two electric field lines to cross? Explain. o)Wly ae equipeucenia e

Explanation / Answer

1)In simple terms, electric potential is the amount of work required to bring a unit positive charge from infinity(or any reference) point to some point without accelerating it.

2)Its the diffrence in electric potentials between the final and intial location of a charge.

3)Given,

u = 0 ; v = 120 V

we know that, W = q V

W = 1.6 x 10^-19 x 120 = 1.92 x 10^-17 J

W = 1.92 x 10^-17 J = 1/2 m v^2

v = sqrt (2 x 1.92 x 10^-17/(9.1 x 10^-31)) = 6.5 x 10^6 m/s

Hence, v = 6.5 x 10^6 m/s

4)No its not at all possible, as they are the contour lines and the points falling in the same equipotential lines are at the same potential.

(b)No,if they would every cross at a point, the electric field will have two different value at that point which is not at all possible. hence electric field lines never cross each other.
