Question

I need help with questions 2-7. This is for an Astronomy course that I am recently taking this semester

Spica pntares 1·There are four constellations of the zodiac that are clearly visible. Identify these constellations. A. B. C. 2. When is the Sun in this part of the sky, give reasons for your answer. 3. What is the vertical line that is seen on the map? 4. For the observer, which named star is best to see from this location? 5. If you are going to make observations of the two stars, which one should you look at first?, give reasons for your answer 6. Which star will culminate first? 7. The Right ascension of Antares is 16hr 30min, and the Right Ascension of Spica is 13hr 25min, what is the sidereal time of the observing site?

Explanation / Answer

2) Sun will be a part of the observing site if we are measuring solar time instead of sidereal time i.e; measuring the day according to the sun ( average solar day = 24 hours) whereas the sidereal time is measuring the day according a particular star from when that the star crosses the meridian again, we will find the average sidereal day is 23 hours 56 minutes.

3) The vertical line seen on the map is the meridian. It is an imaginary line that runs from north to south and goes straight over the zenith ( a point in the sky directly above us).

4) Antares is the best for the observer to see from his location since it is heading the meridian.

5) Spica should be looked at first, since it is about to set, so that required observations are made before it sets. Antares just rose from the east and can be observed for a longer time as compared to Spica.

6) Antares will culminate ( be at the meridian) first at the sidereal time of 16hr 30min while spica have already crossed the meridian when the sidereal time was 13hr 25min.

7)The right ascension of Spica is 13hr 25min, Spica have already transited the meridian, the sidereal time then was 13hr 25min.

The right ascension time of Antares is 16hr 30min , when Antares transits the meridian, the sidereal time will be 16hr 30min.
